State Rep. Doug Wozniak on Thursday voted in support of his plan to create the Michigan Unitrust Act, modernizing state trust law by updating the investment and management processes. The bill passed the House with unanimous support.
House Bill 5110 gives estate planning attorneys additional flexibility to tailor a trust to a client’s needs. Wozniak noted that modern trust investing requires greater flexibility.
“It was great to see my colleagues from both sides of the aisle embrace my plan to open up the trust investment system,” said Wozniak, R-Shelby Township. “This effort ensures that older Michigan trusts aren’t locked into outdated investment strategies and new trusts have the best available management options. Wozniak worked closely with the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan to draft this highly technical and much-needed legislation.
The plan now moves to the State Senate for further consideration.
