Rep. Beeler criticizes governor for ‘shameful ploy’ to hike taxes, fund corporate giveaways

State Rep. Andrew Beeler on Wednesday expressed his frustration with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for seeking to block an automatic income tax cut that would otherwise take effect this year.

“As the people of Michigan cry out for relief from the intense, inflationary pain of high costs, Gov. Whitmer stands in the way,” said Beeler, R-Port Huron. “She’s aiming to stop an automatic income tax cut in the most outrageous way possible — by sneakily shifting money around to fund giveaways to corporations, circumventing accountability in the process. The governor must give up her shameful ploy to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at huge corporations by hiking taxes on Michigan families.”

A law passed by the Republican-led Legislature in 2015 is expected to trigger an automatic cut to the individual income tax rate this year. The cut will be triggered because general fund revenues significantly outpaced inflation year over year, but the governor has proposed a plan to lawmakers that could prevent the trigger by retroactively diverting revenues from the general fund into the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve (SOAR), which is used to fund corporate projects. Beeler said the gambit would jeopardize the automatic tax cut while undermining key accountability procedures that were originally established for SOAR.
