The office of state Rep. Matthew Bierlein is conducting an essay contest as a way to help young minds engage with state government and realize the roles they will eventually have in shaping their communities.
The contest is open to all fourth-grade students within Michigan’s 97th House District. The 97th House District encompasses several communities in Bay, Genesee, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. The district includes Freeland, the cities of Auburn, Caro, Frankenmuth, Vassar and part of Montrose, and the villages of Birch Run and Millington. A full map can be found here.
Essays must address the question: “If you were a state representative, what would you do to leave a positive impact for the State of Michigan?” All submissions must be 250 words or less, or one page double-spaced.
“This is a fun way for our next generation of Michiganders and future leaders to communicate what they’d do if they were involved in government,” said Bierlein, of Vassar. “Having young people engaged in public service and providing them with a platform to share their ideas and perspectives is a good thing. Even at a young age, decisions are being made in Lansing that will shape their educations, their ability to thrive in our workforce down the line, and more. As a father of three young children, I am constantly aware of this as a legislator.
“I look forward to reading the submissions and I invite any parent with an interested child across our region to send in an essay.”
Multiple winners will be selected following the 5 p.m. deadline on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Prizes include a personal state tribute addressed to winning writers and a pizza party for their class. The essay will also be featured in a future press release distributed to news publications across the area, showcasing what Michigan’s future generations feel is in the best interests of residents and communities.
Questions regarding the contest, entries and where to send submissions can be answered via email at MatthewBierlein@house.mi.gov or by phone at (517) 373-8962.
