Michigan students will be safer inside public schools under a plan unveiled today by state Rep. Jaime Greene, Republican Vice Chair of the House Education Committee.

Greene is sponsoring a K-12 school safety plan that carries out the recommendations of a legislative task force formed in the wake of the Oxford school tragedy. The legislation was submitted to the House enrolling clerks last Thursday and was slated to be introduced this week before the horrific events unfolded Monday night at Michigan State University.

“As a mom, my heart grieves for the victims of the tragic events on MSU’s campus this week,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “We must all strengthen our resolve and work to stop this senseless violence. Our bipartisan plan demonstrates a willingness to work together to improve school safety and keep our kids safe.”

House Bill 4091, introduced by Greene, updates and reviews building codes to ensure new buildings include features such as safer corners and bullet-resistant glass to address modern security issues. The bill also establishes safety guidelines to assist schools with procedures for a school building lockdown.

“My common-sense proposal will help secure the buildings where our kids, teachers and staff gather every school day,” Greene said. “There is nothing more important than the safety of our children.

“Kids who are worried about being safe in school have a much more difficult time learning, so it’s vitally important to support efforts to improve school security. This overall plan will also bolster mental health support and create procedures to identify risks to student safety.”

HB 4091 now goes to the House Education Committee for consideration.
