State Rep. Mike Hoadley today voted for planned recreational upgrades for the city of Gladwin that he worked to secure in the Legislature.

Within House Bill 4238 is grant funding for park improvements to Gladwin City Park, including the construction of an American Disabilities Act-compliant restroom and shower building with three universally accessible campground sites.

“Our area is perpetually fighting against the rest of the state for jobs, residents and tourist activity,” said Hoadley, of Au Gres. “These recreational upgrades increase our profile and make our region an even better place to live and visit. I will continue fighting in the Legislature to bring these opportunities and investments to our communities.”

The total cost of the project is estimated at $593,900, and HB 4238 will commit $300,000 from the Natural Resources Trust Fund with the remainder coming from a match by the municipality.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from revenues generated by the development of minerals on state land – not taxpayer money – and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for land acquisition or recreational development projects, according to the Michigan Constitution. The trust fund program dates back to the 1970s.

The recommendations within HB 4238 advance to the Senate for further consideration.
