State Rep. Ron Robinson (R-Utica) today backed a plan to strengthen public safety by cracking down on criminals who flee from police, a dangerous and escalating trend that threatens the safety of law enforcement officers and Michigan communities.
House Bills 4690 and 4691, co-sponsored by Robinson, would strengthen Michigan law by increasing penalties for individuals who willfully attempt to flee or elude police or conservation officers during a stop. The plan bolsters the tiered penalty structure with harsher sentences, including felony charges and mandatory prison time, when the crime results in injury or loss of life, occurs in school or construction zones, or involves repeat offenses.
“There is no excuse for endangering our citizens just to save your own skin,” said Robinson. “We must ensure that people who break the law are held accountable, and we must send a clear message that fleeing from police will not be tolerated. I’ve worked closely with our local prosecutors on this issue, and they are passionate and supportive of this effort to protect our communities.”
“It is not acceptable to put officers and innocent people in danger,” said Robinson. “Crimes this serious demand more than a slap on the wrist. This plan protects our communities from reckless criminals who would selfishly endanger them.”
