Rep. VanSingel’s plan protecting school funding signed into state law
RELEASE|April 2, 2020

State Rep. Scott VanSingel’s plan to protect school funding in Michigan has been signed into state law.

VanSingel’s new law rededicates money back to the school aid fund for this budget year and future years, rather than letting it be used for other purposes. House Bill 4125 also maintains a commitment to the Renew Michigan Fund, which enhances environmental cleanup and water system infrastructure. The Renew Michigan support will come from income taxes – not the school aid fund.

“This is an important solution that protects funding for Michigan schools – and proves good things happen through listening and leadership,” said VanSingel, of Grant. “I support environmental cleanup, but it should not come at the expense of our schools. I am proud to implement a plan that supports our students, teachers and dedicated school staff.”

VanSingel’s measure won broad support from school groups across Michigan.

“Budget procedures at the end of 2019 diverted dollars from our schools and Rep. VanSingel promised our school leaders that he would tackle the issue on our behalf,” said Lori Tubbergen Clark, Superintendent of Newaygo County RESA. “We are so grateful to Rep. VanSingel for working on behalf of the students of Newaygo County, and all students in Michigan, to restore money to the School Aid Fund. It is great news during a challenging time in education.”

The plan ensures schools will receive the same percentage of the state income tax as they did prior to changes made in late 2018. VanSingel’s plan also ensures schools will benefit from rising sales tax revenue generated by online sales.
