Rep. Cavitt: Somebody must pay for governor’s spending, likely rural Michigan

State Rep. Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, released a statement today following the governor’s executive budget recommendations. Cavitt serves as vice chair of the House Military and Veterans Affairs and State Police Appropriations subcommittee.

“Today, the governor gave us no hope that she will veer away from the radical spending spree that’s come to define her time in office. Instead of returning money to the taxpayers or paying down our debt, she keeps announcing expensive new programs.

“The governor continues to plan investments in key Democrat strongholds while leaving the whole of Michigan to pay for it. Working people in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula deserve the same consideration and investment as Detroit and Grand Rapids.

“The governor’s recommendations included some specific focus on local law enforcement. In the past, Northeast Michigan has been left out of these valuable programs. This practice cannot continue. Law enforcement in our rural areas is just as important as that in more urban areas and deserves same the consideration and funding.

“I was pleased to hear the governor plans to finish the budget by May. I sincerely hope Democrats can keep that timeline.”
