Rep. DeBoyer: Retirement announcement of high-ranking MSP leader comes amidst House panel’s work

Contact: Jay DeBoyer

House Oversight Committee Chair Jay DeBoyer today issued the following statement after Michigan State Police Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe today announced her pending retirement from the department. DeBoyer and the House Oversight Committee have investigated allegations of misconduct against MSP leadership.

In a landmark move to deliver transparency, the Oversight Committee beginning in June utilized depositions to conduct its investigation and gather information from nine current or former MSP employees. The committee continued its work despite identities of rank-and-file officers who had come forward with allegations being leaked to the media by top MSP brass in an effort to undermine the investigation.

Other allegations made against MSP included favoritism in staff promotions, inappropriate salary bonuses, and instituting overly restrictive policies preventing troopers from doing their jobs. DeBoyer is soon set to release a report with the committee’s findings:

“In the coming days, our House Oversight Committee’s final report on our MSP investigation will specifically detail instances of instability and failed leadership, including from Lt. Col. Brimacombe, and how those failures have both impacted trooper morale and grossly abused taxpayer dollars.

“The timing of our report’s imminent release and this abrupt announcement was not by chance. Our investigation brought results. From the beginning of the legislative term, we have been committed to shining a light on state government and delivering accountability for the people of Michigan. Oversight is a fundamental responsibility of the Legislature. It is one of the people’s most important checks on government, and representatives of the people serving on our committee will continue this work with diligence and determination.”
