State Rep. Joe Bellino, R-Monroe, today released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court struck down a New York law requiring citizens to show ‘proper cause’ for seeking a concealed carry license:
“I strongly support the United States Supreme Court’s decision to ease the concealed carry laws in New York. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that New York’s overreaching regulations, which made it unnecessarily problematic to obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun, were unconstitutional. The current requirement for an applicant to prove ‘proper cause’ to carry a concealed handgun is a clear violation of both the Second, and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution. The fact that protecting oneself, or their families is not considered proper cause is ludicrous. I am encouraged by the Supreme Court’s decision, and applaud their efforts to protect the rights of the citizens of the great United States.”
The House on Wednesday approved an extensive bill package, with Rep. Bellino’s support, to help strengthen people’s civil liberties by updating and clarifying executive and emergency powers.
State Rep. Joe Bellino, R-Monroe, today released the following statement criticizing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s new call for a sales tax pause after she previously vetoed three bipartisan tax relief plans passed by the Legislature:
“I am urging the Natural Resources Commission to rescind new deer harvest reporting requirements, which I believe are unjust. These mandatory requirements include criminal penalties for those who fail to comply. I am sympathetic to the need for deer population monitoring, but the seven unelected members of the NRC simply do not have any right to enforce criminal penalties.
State Rep. Joe Bellino and Sen. Dale Zorn today announced the Port of Monroe, and the Arthur Lesow Community Center (ALCC) in Monroe will receive nearly $13 million in funding as part of the final budget proposal approved today by the Legislature.
