State Rep. Markkanen today championed the passage of a bipartisan budget deal for next year, locking in critical funding for first responders and schools. The budget agreement lands major wins for Michigan residents, including no new taxes, strengthened accountability measures, and a focus on efficiency in state department spending. 

“This budget reflects a commitment to doing the job the right way,” said Markkanen, R-Hancock. “We focused on the core responsibilities of the government, protected taxpayers from higher taxes, and ensured our state remains financially strong while making investments that will benefit families across Michigan.” 

The bipartisan budget deal, approved by an overwhelming majority of lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats alike, continues historic investments in public safety, infrastructure, and education. Markkanen agreement continues a new trend of responsible budgeting in Lansing, protecting the state’s rainy-day fund, blocking tax increases, and making key investments all while delivering a more efficient budget than last year. 

The budget agreement also includes $30,000,000 for infrastructure improvements at Michigan Technological University. The funding will go to support a Center for Convergence and Innovation. The support underscores lawmakers’ commitment to supporting education across the board, from kindergarten to college. Infrastructure improvements make Michigan higher education institutions more desirable, helping draw young people back to Michigan. These improvements to Michigan Tech also are a major asset to the surrounding community. More students often means more business and potential residents for surrounding areas. 

“Michigan Technological University is one of the Upper Peninsula’s greatest assets, and these infrastructure improvements will help ensure it continues attracting talented students, researchers, and employers to our region,” Markkanen said. “Investing in Michigan Tech is an investment in our local economy, our workforce, and the future of the U.P. This funding will strengthen innovation while creating opportunities that benefit students and the surrounding communities alike.” 

The budgets in education, including record-breaking per-student funding of $10,300 per student and true universal breakfast and lunch programs. Lawmakers also secured funding for teacher bonuses, school buses, dual enrollment, and early learning programs. The investments in education ensure schools have ample resources to prepare Michigan kids for adulthood, all while keeping them fed and ready to learn.
