Rep. Pavlov supports plan to provide paid military leave for first responders
RELEASE|April 1, 2026

State Rep. Joseph Pavlov recently voted in favor of legislation supporting first responders who balance careers in public safety and military service.

House Bill 5233 would require fire and law enforcement agencies to provide at least 26 days of paid military leave each year to full-time employees who serve in the National Guard or military reserves. The plan ensures these individuals can complete required training and duties without losing income or benefits.

“These are individuals who answer the call twice, at home and in uniform,” said Pavlov (R-Smiths Creek). “We owe it to them to make sure they’re not losing a paycheck for stepping up to serve.”

Currently, employers are not required to provide paid leave for military service, creating financial strain for first responders balancing demanding careers and ongoing military commitments. Pavlov said the legislation ends this unfair burden and ensures those who serve their communities and their country are fully supported.

House Bill 5233 passed in the House and has progressed to the Senate for further consideration.
