Rep. Schuette to Chair House Rules Committee, Serve on Other Key House Panels
RELEASE|January 30, 2025

State Representative Bill G. Schuette will Chair the House Rules Committee for the 2025-26 legislative term, a lead committee that will evaluate legislation related to administrative rulemaking authority.

If a bill amends an administrative rule, it must first pass through the House Rules Committee before proceeding to the full House. Legislation that has been under consideration on the House floor for longer than two weeks may also be referred to and taken up by the committee. As Chair of the committee, Schuette will also be a member of the House Republican leadership team.

In addition to Chairing the House Rules Committee, Schuette will serve on the House Finance Committee, the House Insurance Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

“I am honored to be chosen by Speaker Hall to Chair this important committee,” Schuette said. “It will be my focus as committee Chair to ensure that policy solutions and administrative rules that come from our Michigan House Republican Caucus and go to the Michigan House are delivering efficient, real results for the people of Michigan and not bureaucratic red tape.

“Michiganders are eager to see their elected officials get to work and deliver solutions to make life more affordable, repair local roads, cut government red tape and other priorities they’ve been clear on over the past several months. Serving on these committees will give people I represent in Midland and Gladwin counties a seat at the table as plans that impact their lives and livelihoods are debated and moved through the legislative process. That’s a big asset for our communities, and I’m ready to get started.”

Schuette was also appointed to the Michigan Legislative Council, a bipartisan, bicameral body of legislators that provides bill drafting, research and other services to members of the Legislature. Just six members of the Michigan House are selected to serve on the council.

Schuette recently was named Chair of the House Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses to begin the current term. He led discussion and helped advance reforms that will allow Michigan workers to maintain their way of life and small businesses to keep their doors open in the face of short-sighted Michigan Supreme Court mandates on wages, the state’s tip credit system, and earned sick leave.
