State Rep. Donni Steele (R-Orion Township), chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Local Transportation, provided the following update for residents after this week’s committee hearing, which featured a presentation from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on the State Trunkline Construction Program.

The committee heard testimony from Gregg Brunner, Chief Operations Officer at MDOT, who reviewed 2025 construction accomplishments, previewed major projects planned for 2026, and provided an update on ongoing efforts to improve work zone safety across Michigan.

“This hearing was a helpful opportunity to hear directly from MDOT about the progress they’ve made and what drivers can expect in the year ahead,” said Steele. “With major corridors and bridge projects affecting our area, I want to make sure residents have clear and timely information.”

Key updates impacting local residents include:

  • Eastbound I-696: MDOT highlighted completion of the major eastbound I-696 work, which has been a significant project for daily commuters and local communities.
  • Westbound I-696: Construction on westbound I-696 is scheduled to begin this year.
  • Church Street Plaza Bridge: Brunner reviewed the reconstruction of the Church Street Plaza Bridge, noting the project is nearing completion.
  • Gordie Howe International Bridge: MDOT reiterated the new bridge is expected to open this spring, marking a major infrastructure milestone for Michigan’s international trade and transportation network.

Steele said she will continue working to ensure residents stay informed as MDOT prepares for major construction seasons and lane closures that may affect local traffic patterns.

“I know construction can be frustrating, especially when it impacts commutes and local travel,” said Steele. “But these projects are important long-term investments in safety and reliability, and I will continue sharing updates as new timelines and details are released.”
