Rep. Steve Frisbie: Protecting Michigan families as federal SNAP funding stalls
RELEASE|October 31, 2025

LANSING, Mich. — State Rep. Steve Frisbie today assured Calhoun County residents that Michigan House Republicans are acting responsibly to protect families who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amid the ongoing federal budget standoff.

“I know many of you have called my office concerned about the federal budget standoff and SNAP benefits,” said Frisbie, R-Battle Creek. “While the program is federal and I cannot speak on what the federal government will do, Michigan House Republicans have come to an agreement with Governor Whitmer to ensure $4.5 million of existing general-fund dollars will be provided to the Food Bank Council of Michigan each week the federal government is shut down. This covers all counties across our state.”

Frisbie said the bipartisan agreement ensures food banks can continue supporting families without expanding government or creating new programs. He noted the Michigan Senate passed a $70 million proposal, but House leaders raised concerns about replacing federal dollars without reimbursement.

“We are not heartless — and we understand your needs are dire,” Frisbie said. “That’s why we’re putting your needs above politics. If you have questions, my staff and I will do our best to get you answers quickly. For immediate food assistance, call 211.”

“Michigan families shouldn’t suffer because of dysfunction in Washington,” Frisbie said. “We’re taking care of our people and making sure food remains on the table.”
