State Rep. Doug Wozniak recently supported a legislative initiative to fund essential natural preservation efforts in Macomb County. Wozniak’s vote ensures the River Bends Park in Shelby Township will receive more than $164,000 for the planned development of a barrier-free recreational area along the Clinton River Water Trail.

River Bends Park encompasses more than 850 acres and includes picnic areas, several miles of hiking trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, access points to the Clinton River, and rich wildlife.

“Supporting key projects back home is one of the best parts about representing our community,” said Wozniak, R-Shelby Township. “River Bends Park is a wonderful community resource for all ages to enjoy the outdoors. I’m proud to play a role in expanding the park and taking another step toward further preserving the parks’ natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.”

State funding for the project is part of Senate Bill 817, which includes $27.3 million for 18 land acquisition and 35 recreational development projects throughout the state with revenues from the Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from mineral development on state land – not general tax money – and is distributed annually in partnership with local governments. The funding must be used for acquisition or recreational development projects.
