The Michigan Senate today unanimously approved state Rep. Timmy Beson’s plan to preserve and update the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument.

“Many men and women have given their lives while serving Michigan communities as police officers,” said Beson, R-Bangor Township. “The Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument helps us remember them. But it needs to stay up to date so we include all of these great heroes. That way, the monument will truly honor our fallen Michigan officers.”

The Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument, dedicated in 2019 near the state Capitol, commemorates the names of state and local law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. However, state law does not currently provide for updating the monument with the names of additional fallen officers.

Beson’s House Bill 4821 would keep the monument up to date. The plan would retain the monument commission originally created to oversee design and construction for the monument, and authorize it to provide maintenance and upkeep.

In last year’s budget, Beson helped secure a $500,000 deposit into the monument fund to pay for maintenance costs.

HB 4821 now advances to the governor for her consideration.
