State Representative Doug Wozniak, R-Shelby Township, expressed frustration after House Democrats voted against legislation that would secure critical funding for public safety, education, and local infrastructure in the event of a government shutdown.

“It’s disappointing that so many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle refused to support a commonsense solution to protect Michigan families,” said Wozniak, R-Shelby Township. “These bills ensure that students, first responders, and essential workers don’t become collateral damage if a government shutdown occurs.”

House Bills 4161 and 4162, which protect funding for K-12 schools, law enforcement, and other essential services in the event of a shutdown, successfully passed the House with a 59-49 vote. However, almost every House Democrat voted against the measures.

“A shutdown would hurt communities across our state, and this legislation ensures that key services remain operational no matter what,” said Wozniak. “It’s troubling that some lawmakers would rather risk uncertainty for families, students, and local governments instead of supporting a proactive, bipartisan solution.”
