Rep. Markkanen: Grant program can provide needed relief for Main Street
RELEASE|March 3, 2022

State Rep. Greg Markkanen today highlighted a new state grant program that can provide relief to U.P. business owners who have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

Markkanen voted to advance a bipartisan plan to create a $409 million grant program for businesses that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Property taxes, unemployment insurance taxes, license and inspection fees and impacted sales are factored into grant totals. The plan became law last December.

“Despite lower COVID case numbers compared to the rest of the state, businesses in the U.P. were impacted severely and many were unable to generate any revenue,” said Markkanen, of Hancock. “Despite not being able to operate by state order, they were still expected to pay taxes and fees to the state. This grant program works to set that right and that is why I fought for it in the Legislature.”

The application for the program will be open until March 31. Local business owners can visit michigan.gov/abr to learn more and apply.
